The Traveling Stage Company’s “Women in History” program takes you back in time to meet first-hand the heroines who shaped our nation. Listen to each woman as she delights the audience with tales of her fascinating life, loves, and adventures. A highlight of the production is a Question & Answer session with the audience immediately following. Mary Todd Lincoln, from a well respected, affluent family entered the social scene as a well educated woman with ambitious goals. She was deeply involved in the politics of the day and when introduced to Mr. Abraham Lincoln, a man of humble means, she immediately recognized a man of greatness with a strong political future. After a brief, sometimes shaky, courtship they married and experienced the joys and sorrows of family life during difficult financial and chaotic political times. As you listen to this highly motivating force behind her husband, Mary Todd Lincoln emerges in your eyes as a woman who wholeheartedly supported Mr. Lincoln towards the presidency of the United States during one of the most turbulent times in United States history, the Civil War. Against all odds, a stalwart 18th century female slave from upstate New York withstands her years of oppression to rise to one of this country’s foremost speakers for human rights, Her journey takes her from the Dutch plantation where she withstood the cruel and unjust treatment that propelled her to tell her story, to her eventual meeting with President Abraham Lincoln. With her strong faith, unflappable idealism and endearing manners, Sojourner’s words and music inspire all who hear her message.
